Mother's Day / Día de las madres

A lovely Mothers' Day. The first picture is of the mountains after the rain, and then there is Candil getting sleepy on the front porch. The first mother of this day is my daughter's mother-in-law. There is a gentle word in Spanish for our relationship: "consuegras". The second is a remarkable woman who has had many children, grand children and great-grand-children. Then my grandson clowns for the camera at María's house, and afterwards María's flowers bloom on my table. Again the mountains after the first rain that ends the dry season. I don't know when it will rain again, but today was a wonderful transformation from dark skies, to light drizzle, and finally to a clear view of the mountains.

Un hermoso día de las madres. La primera foto es de las montañas y después Candil está adormitando frente a la puerta. La primera madre es mi consuegra. La segunda es de una mujer maravillosa que ha tenido muchos hijos, nietos y bisnietos. Luego mi nieto hace payasadas para la cámera frente a la casa de María y las flores de María embelesan mi propia mesa. No sé cuando volverá a llover, pero hoy la neblina, las nubes pesadas y la llovizna dieron paso de una hermosa vista de las montañas.

So my middle grandson shot up past me. We just noticed today. This first picture is the evidence. I’m so proud of him: he has been a beautiful boy, and is quickly becoming a wonderful young man. The second photo shows city mangos ready to go from green to gold. It’s such a lovely tree, and I guess this posting is all about natural change as it should be.

Mi segundo nieto me pasó y de ahora en adelante me va a mirar desde las alturas. Estoy tan orgullosa de cómo se transforma desde un hermoso niño en un espléndido joven. En la segunda foto los mangos de ciudad cambiarán de verde a dorado y supongo que este mensaje tiene que ver con los cambios tal como deben ocurrir en el mejor de los mundos.

May 1st / Primero de Mayo

I stayed home today while everyone else was marching for one labor cause or another. I do better with whole phrases these days than I do with shouted slogans in all-together-now style. I did a thing or two in the garden, read a bit of what my students have sent, and perused a couple of chapters from a book I get to from time to time. A quiet, lovely time.

No marché, ni pro ni en contra de nada laboral. Considero que a estas alturas de mi vida prefiero frases completas que lemas gritadas en unísono. Me quedé en casa, haciendo alguna cosa en el jardín, leyendo en la computadora lo más recién de mis estudiantes, y viendo un par de capítulos en un libro de ensayos en el patio mientras terminaba la tarde. Lindo día.
